In the recent years, many assisted reproductive technologies have been helping the infertile couples. They are highly successful and the rate of childbirth through ART is increasing every year. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one such Assisted Reproductive Technology that helps many couples to be blessed with children.
In Vitro Fertilization is the process in which the eggs are extracted and sperm sample is taken. Then, the egg is fertilized with a healthy sperm in a sterile laboratory condition and the fertilized egg is placed inside the uterus for further growth. Before proceeding to IVF treatment, the infertile woman is made to undergo blood tests and scans to assess the infertility factors.
Ovulation Induction: Ovulation is induced with injections and follicles monitored. Multiple follicles are developed by adjusting the dosage of the drugs or injections. Once the follicles are matured, she is taken up for egg retrieval.
Egg retrieval: Under short sedation, a thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall under ultrasonography guidance and oocytes retrieved.
1) IVF: If a good number of Oocytes are retrieved, it is left in a dish with healthy sperms to fertilize naturally.
2) ICSI: If the number of oocytes is left and sperm count is also deficient, sperm is injected into oocytes to fertilize the egg.
Embryo Transfer: Finally, the healthiest embryo is transferred into the uterus. For further development, the rest of the embryos are preserved.
Generally, the patient is advised to take rest for a whole day. She might feel the following symptoms such as Breast tenderness, mild cramping, bloating, vaginal discharge, constipation. Pregnancy outcome is checked after 14 days.
