Endometritis
Endometritis is described as an infection in the uterus that causes inflammation of the lining of the uterus. Endometritis can be developed from many causes and can be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated they can cause problems with the reproductive organ of the women resulting in infertility and other health illness. At Greenview medical centre we offer all the support and care for patients with endometritis. Endometritis is developed as a result of infection in the uterus and they are classified as:
Infections that are sexually transmitted
Tuberculosis
Infections from the bacteria present in the vagina
Endometritis can be developed after a major change in the body. This includes a miscarriage or abortion, normal delivery, cesarean delivery or long labor pain. During these events the bacteria present in the vagina may get mixed up and produce infections at the region. At Greenview medical centre we have an expert team of doctors to discuss and fix treatments for endometritis and to take proper care for the well being of the patient.
Endometritis can also be developed after a surgical procedure that involves the uterus and the cervix. This facilitates the passage of bacteria from the cervix to the uterus resulting in infection of the lining of the uterus. Procedures that can develop endometritis include:
- Hysteroscopy
- Inserting intrauterine device (IUD)
- Uterine scraping
- Endometritis is diagnosed by following symptoms:
- Abdominal swelling
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding and discharge
- Constipation
- Discomfort during bowel movement
- Fever
- Pain in the pelvis and abdominal area
The doctor will examine the abdomen, uterus, and cervix for any abnormality and discharge. Few tests are followed to confirm the presence of infection. These include taking sample from the cervix to test for mix of bacteria that causes an infection. Other procedures include
Endometrial biopsy: this biopsy is performed by removing tissue from the lining of the uterus for investigation.
Laparoscopy: laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a laparoscope (a long tube with a camera attached to its end to give enlarged images) is inserted through a small incision made in the abdomen to observe the internal uterine cavity and the pelvic region.
Blood test to measure white blood cell (WBC) count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).
If endometritis left untreated they can lead to following complications:
- Infertility
- Pelvic peritonitis
- Formation and collections of pus in the uterus
- Develop bacteria in the blood
- Blood infection that leads to low blood pressure
