Navigating Menopause and Geriatric Gynecology at Greenview Medical Centre

At Greenview Medical Centre, we house a dedicated Menopausal and Geriatric Gynecology department, equipped with a team of specialists to address all issues related to the menopausal period.

Menopause, also referred to as the climacteric, marks the permanent cessation of menstrual periods, defined by amenorrhea of 12 consecutive months, indicating the end of a woman’s reproductive years.

Typically occurring between the ages of 49 and 52, menopause is characterized by a decrease in estrogen hormones and an increase in FSH levels in the blood.

Signs and Symptoms of Menopause:

During the early stages of menopause transition, menstrual cycles may remain regular, but the interval between cycles begins to lengthen. Hormone levels fluctuate, and ovulation may not occur with every cycle.

Symptoms experienced during the menopausal transition and post-menopause vary widely among women and may include:

  • Changes in menstrual patterns, such as shorter or longer cycles and irregular bleeding
  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, often due to hormonal fluctuations
  • Physical symptoms like painful intercourse, vaginal dryness, and atrophic vaginitis
  • Lack of energy, joint soreness, back pain, breast changes, heart palpitations, headaches, and skin changes
  • Psychological symptoms including anxiety, memory issues, depression, irritability, and mood swings

Long-term Effects of Menopause:

Menopause can also confer long-term effects such as an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, osteopenia, osteoporosis, and accelerated decline in lung function. Women who experience menopause before the age of 45 may face a heightened risk of heart disease, mortality, and impaired lung function.
