Menstrual cycles are a sequence of changes that occurs in specific parts of the body as a part of preparing for pregnancy. Menstrual periods are a part of this preparation cycle and include menstrual bleeding that lasts for about 5 -7 days. Most of the women face some menstrual related issues during their life time and it is common. Some of the menstrual related issues are discussed below.
Premenstrual Syndrome – premenstrual syndrome or PMS begins few days prior actual period. Some symptoms associated with PMS include bloating, aches, depression, constipation and abdominal cramps.
Heavy Periods – heavy periods also known as menorrhagia is caused by hormone imbalance resulting in heavy bleeding than normal. Other reasons for heavy bleeding include infections, fibroid, hypothyroidism, diet or exercise variations.
Absent Periods – absent periods also known as amenorrhea is when your monthly menstrual period is missed. This can be classified as primary and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is when you don’t start your menstrual cycle by the age of 16. Secondary amenorrhea is when there is no menstruation for more than 6 months. When adult women miss menstruation there can be several reasons such as
- Premature ovarian failure
- Pelvic infection
- Birth control Medication
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Early menopause
Painful Periods– menstrual bleeding is always accompanied by pain. This can be lighter or heavier depending on each individual’s pain perception. However some women may have extreme pain which can be an indication for some causes such as:
- Presence of fibroids in the uterus
- Pelvic infection and inflammation
- Endometriosis
Diagnosing Menstrual Problems
The doctor takes a note on the previous menstrual cycle patterns to figure what the abnormality in the menstruation cycle. A pelvic examination is conducted to figure out if there is any occurrence of infections or inflammations. Various blood tests are suggested to check for pregnancy or hormonal imbalance that causes menstrual irregularities. For more severe causes tests including endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy or ultrasound scans are recommended by the doctor to locate the exact cause for menstrual irregularities.
Treatments are decided based on the results obtained from physical examination and reports. Heavy and irregular menstrual problems are rectified by prescribing birth control pills. For hormone related issues hormone replacements meditation are suggested by the doctor.
