Emergency & Critical Care
Emergency and Critical Care: Saving Lives When Every Second Counts:
Emergency and Critical Care represent the frontline of medicine, addressing the urgent needs of patients facing life-threatening illnesses or injuries. This specialized branch of medicine, often referred to as Emergency Medicine, requires professionals with acute diagnostic skills and the ability to provide immediate resuscitative care.
In the Emergency Department, the specialists are tasked with:
- Swiftly identifying the issue at hand
- Assessing, treating, and stabilizing patients in response to acute illnesses or injuries.
What happens there? Emergency and Critical Care professionals handle a range of critical conditions, including:
Cardiac Arrest: A sudden loss of blood flow due to heart failure, often leading to unconsciousness, abnormal breathing, chest pain, and nausea. Patients are transported by ambulance to the emergency center and treated with basic life support followed by advanced interventions.
Heart Attack: Occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is restricted or blocked, resulting in chest pain, shortness of breath, and other symptoms. Upon arrival at the emergency center, patients are triaged for immediate resuscitation, including oxygen therapy, monitoring, and diagnostic tests.
Physical Trauma: Injuries from accidents such as vehicle collisions or falls may require X-rays, fracture reduction, or emergency surgery, depending on the severity of the trauma.
Mental Illness: Patients presenting with acute psychiatric issues are first stabilized and assessed for injuries before referral to the psychiatric department for further care.
Chronic Respiratory Diseases: Conditions like Asthma and COPD may lead to acute exacerbations requiring oxygen therapy, bronchodilators, and diagnostic tests such as chest X-rays and arterial blood gas analysis.
